Q & A

Coupon Clipper: How do you go about getting a rain check?

Me: Receiving a rain check* is dependant on the stores policy. Here is a break down for my local stores...

* A rain check is a written guarantee that you will receive the sale price on an item, when it is back in stock!

Meijer: To receive a rain check at Meijer you can ask in three separate locations: 1. ask your cashier, 2. ask at the customer service desk, or 3. ask at the podium in the aisle that leads to all of the checkouts (This persons job is to take care of the needs of the cashiers, and is also called a CSA).

Meijer rain checks are valid for 30 days, and have printed limits written on them. My local store limits the number of items that you can purchase with a rain check to 12.

Meijer will NOT write you a rain check for an item that is not advertised in the weekly flyer.

*Meijer will NOT write rain checks for Super Saturday one day deals... so shop early!

Kroger:
To receive a rain check at Kroger you may only ask for one at the customer service desk.

Kroger rain checks state that they are valid for 30 days, but Kroger does NOT enforce this policy. I have spent rain checks that have been written more than a year before I spent them! Kroger does NOT set limits for number of products that may be purchased with a rain check.

*Kroger will NOT write you a rain check for an item that is not listed in the weekly flyer.

Target: To receive a rain check at Target you must ask either your cashier or at the customer service desk.

Target rain checks are available for redemption for up to 90 days.

CVS:
To receive a rain check at CVS you may ask your cashier for one when you are checking out.

CVS rain checks are written to include the sale price PLUS any Extra Care Bucks that you may have received if the item had been in stock. (Woo Hoo!) CVS rain checks WILL have a limit to the number of products that you may purchase with your rain check, but the rain check does NOT have an expiration date!

Walgreens: To receive a rain check at Walgreens you will need to ask the store manager for one.

Walgreens rain checks WILL have a limit to the number of products that you may purchase with your rain check, but they will NOT have an expiration date!

*Walgreens will NOT include a way for Register Rewards to be given in conjunction with redeeming your rain check.

Rite Aid: To receive a rain check at Rite Aid, you need to either ask a manager or your cashier.

Rite Aid rain checks need to be redeemed within 30 of being written.

Personal Note: There have been times that my rain check was about to expire (at both Meijer and Target) and the shelves had not been restocked yet. I have visited the customer service desk and been written *new* rain checks to extend my purchasing period!

(Did I miss anything?)

Q & A

Coupon Clipper: Great shopping! But I have a question...is this your "weekly" shopping or "coupon only" shopping? When I go shopping, I get good deals on many things I buy but I also HAVE to buy things each week, such as milk, OJ, apple juice, bread, cereal, canned goods, etc., that may or may not be on sale or that I have coupons for. I have enough canned tomatoes and tomato sauce to last me a while, but there are many common things that we need every week that creeps that $$ total up on me.

Because of this weekly shopping that I have to do, I can never just pay $13 for almost $100 worth of items, items that my family needs each week. Like I mentioned, I do try and stockpile when I can but there are still those same items that can't be stockpiled or purchased cheaply.

Just wanted your thoughts on this.

Me: Since I have been an avid coupon spender for nearly two years, I have learned to stock up on the food and household items that my family uses more frequently, when they are on sale and I have matching coupons!

Each week, I sit at my computer (or look at the sales flyers in paper format) and review what each store is offering as 'sale items' that week. I pay the most attention to the front page and the back page of each sales flyer- since that is where the stores advertise their greatest discounted items (these super discounted items are also called 'Loss Leaders.' Loss leader means that the store is willing to take a financial hit on the specified items... in hopes that I will do the rest of my spending that week on their other non-sale items! *Milk and fruits and vegetables are often highlighted as loss leaders!).

My personal grocery shopping strategy is as follows:

1. My main grocery store is Meijer. I find that Meijer offers the best produce in my area, for fairly decent prices. I like to shop around 10am since meat mark downs and a reduced produce cart appear (at my store, Livonia) around that time.

I LOVE that Meijer accepts manufacturer coupons (doubles up to $.50) and that I can spend Meijer store coupons as well (Mealbox coupons).

When meat is on a great sale, I will stock up by purchasing what I think that my family may eat/entertain with for the next three months. When frozen chicken breasts are on sale, I may purchase 6 large bags, and store them in my freezer. I also purchase ground beef in larger quantities- ensuring that all of my cooking is with sale priced meats.

I plan my fresh produce purchases around what I can pick up off of the reduced produce cart, what my family will definitely consume (apples, bananas, tomatoes and lettuce for sure!), and what is on super sale that week.

As far as dairy, I purchase milk and eggs when we need them. If milk is on a pretty good sale during the week, I will purchase our milk early in the week for our weekly consumption and then I will pick up more milk (for the following week's use) later in the week, so two weeks worth of milk is purchase on sale!

When cheese is on sale, I will purchase several blocks when I can spend $1/less per block, and then I shred it myself, as I have found that an 8oz block yields more cheese than an 8 oz package of already shredded cheese.

2. I shop at Kroger a couple of times per month- but I only run in really quickly to solely purchase the loss leader items with coupons.

3. I watch for grocery sales at Target and the drug stores! Often cereal, Jello, spices and other food items are great deals at these stores. I am willing to pop in to purchase items that we regularly use!

4. I occasionally shop at Costco. I do purchase a few items, like Crasins, that are the best price at Costco. More recently, I have fallen in love with Gordon Food Service, their Feta, meatballs and egg noodles are great quality and are decently priced!

5. I also occasionally shop a 'mom & pop' type of tiny local grocery store in my neighborhood. I will check out their sales flyer each week and see if there is something I could stock up on.

When I share my grocery purchases in pictures, that is exactly what I have purchased on my main grocery shopping trip for the week. I normally do not take pictures of my little shopping jaunts, but maybe it would be helpful if I do. (Taking pictures of my groceries takes time, effort and me running interference with a toddler :))

I would also like to add, that as far as laundry detergent, shampoo and toilet paper- I normally keep these items completely off of my grocery list by purchasing them with my Extra Care Bucks at CVS or with my Register Rewards at Walgreens.

The BIG picture behind successfully spending coupons- is to purchase what you need BEFORE you need it. Plan in advance (during a sale) to purchase the items that your family uses most often, and then stock up!

Q & A

Coupon Clipper: Do I have to ask a store to double my coupon and will they even double a 50 cent one to a dollar off???? Plus, how many coupons can I use in one transaction. At Meijer for example... Thanks.

Me: If a store doubles coupons they will state that information either on the front or the back page of the weekly flyer (or it may be posted in the window of the store front). When a store advertises doubling coupons, they will also inform you of the value of coupons that they are willing to double.

In my neighborhood, the larger grocery chains, like Meijer and Kroger, advertise coupons doubled up to (and including) $.50. So, a $.35 coupon becomes $.70, and a $.50 coupon becomes $1's worth of savings. It is also true that a $.55 coupon (and higher in face value) is just accepted at face value.

The doubling of coupons isn't something that you need to ask your cashier to do for you, the cash registers are programmed to do that automatically!

Kroger recently changed their coupon redemption policy to accept THREE identical coupons per transaction. Any value, any time. (Break your purchases up into more than one transaction if you need to!) If your coupons are $.50 (or a smaller face value) they all will automatically be doubled when scanned by the cashier.

Meijer allows the first TWO identical coupons with face values of $.50 (or a smaller face value) to be doubled per transaction. Similarly to Kroger, just purchase your items in smaller transactions so that each of your coupons are doubled.

Q & A

Coupon Clipper: Hi! I am new to couponing and enjoy your site, I live in Columbus OH. My favorite store is Kroger because of the rewards I earn with my Kroger Mastercard. I have been researching internet printable coupons and have seen that Kroger is hesitant to take them and prefers that you load coupons onto your Kroger Plus card to be processed at checkout.

This is a great idea but I am hesitant because it will be hard for me to track. I am wondering what your experience has been with this. Does it show up differently on the receipt so I can make sure it was credited? Do you have a good way to keep track of what you have downloaded to your card so you remember what is on it?

Also, do you know how many coupons I can stack per item at Kroger? I had three different coupons for cereal and they cut me off at two, is that normal?

Thanks for your help. I am really getting some good deals and its so exciting.

Me: You have given me some interesting information! I do know that Kroger has discontinued carrying certain products (Cottonelle 4 packs) because of internet printable coupon fraud (coupons were scanned and then printed, which is illegal, and Kroger was not reimbursed for the scanned counterfeit coupons), but I have not heard of their hesitation here in Michigan.

I also find it interesting that Kroger prefers you to download your coupons electronically onto your Kroger card instead of using internet printable coupons- since they are NOT the same. Internet printables can be printed twice per computer and are sometimes reset during the month to allow you to print them again, and the coupons that you load onto your Kroger card are only available to be used ONCE per month... and those coupons DO NOT double... ever!

Personally, I do not use the loadable Kroger coupons- for the same reasons as you:

1. I don't want another 'thing' to keep track of! I much prefer the handing over of a paper coupon!

2. I've heard of one too many people needing to go through a long hassle of getting their eCoupon money back when the eCoupon wasn't deducted when it should have been.

Kroger's coupon policy allows one coupon per item, unless the coupon states otherwise, like a coupon may state: save $1 on two products. In Michigan, Kroger just made a new rule that allows you to spend up to THREE identical coupons per transaction. Maybe you just need to purchase your groceries in more than one transaction!

Do any SYS readers have any advice for eCoupons at Kroger?

Shop Your Way to FREE Phone Coverage!

KROGER HAS THEIR OWN PAY AS YOU GO PHONE.

Shocking isn't it?

My friend Amy just picked up a Blackberry knock off (full keyboard) for $49!

Amy excitedly says "The "fees" and terms (rollover, unlimited text, etc) are the "same" (basically) as a Virgin Mobile pay as you go phone. It even runs on the Sprint Network, just like Virgin Mobile, but the best part of this "Kroger phone" is that you can tie up to 2 store rewards cards and earn free minutes!!! 20 minutes for every $100 you spend in a 30 period. Then phone itself was $49 (with Kroger card) and it comes with 300 minutes and you get an additional 200 minutes when you register your store card to the phone. I'm so excited the shopping I do now, will pay for my CELL PHONE =)"

Check out http://www.iwirelesshome.com/ for additional information~ ...Just think of all of the talking, texting, and tweeting that Amy can do now!!!

Grocery Shopping at Kroger

Grocery Total: $26.08

I LOVE when Kroger runs the cereal and milk promotions!

I had found (4) HN Cheerios coupons in boxes of Ziploc's that I had previously purchased, so I was thrilled to use them in conjunction of the sale!

I also picked up a coupon for saving $1.25/3 Philly cream cheese bricks when I was shopping at Meijer this week (near the Ziploc's display)- and since it was a Manufacturer's coupon, I was able to spend the coupon at Kroger this week since Philly is on sale for $.99 each!

Grocery Game Plan: Kroger

Here are my favorite items this week, 10/12- 10/18 at Kroger.

*** Be sure to read Kroger's newest coupon policy below... let me know what you think!

************************************************************

Kroger brand cheese (select varieties), $1/package
Includes: sliced, shredded and blocks

Kroger brand cream cheese, $1/brick

Kroger brand chips and tortillas chips, $1/bag

***Purchase all three plus a can of beanless chili and enjoy one of my easiest and yummy party dips!

1. Soften the brick of cream cheese on an oven safe/microwave safe shallow dish (2 inches is all that is necessary).

2. Pour the chili over the cream cheese and lightly sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese (too much shredded cheese makes it hard to scoop with a chip!!!).

3. Bake for 10 minutes at 350*, or until it is bubbly and soft, or microwave for 90-ish seconds.

4. Enjoy with tortilla chips!

WARNING: You'd better make two... this dip gets eaten quickly!!!

Visit macombmoneysavers for the entire listing of sales this week at Kroger for the Metro Detroit area.

Grocery Game Plan: Kroger

This is the second week of Kroger's MEGA Sale (Purchase 10 participating items and receive an additional $5 discount at the register), so the deals are similar to last weeks sale items.

I personally will be skipping this sale this week, nothing has caught my attention as a *stellar* deal.
