Toilet Paper

OK, understand that it is kind of a taboo subject to talk about toilet paper. Weird huh? We all use it- so I think TP deserves a bit of lime light here at Sharpen Your Scissors!

Once upon a time Kroger sold 4 roll packages for $.99. Ah, the good ol' days! Frequently, the makers of Cottonelle brand toilet paper would publish $.50 off coupons in the Sunday paper, and Kroger would double those coupons to make the 4 roll pack of TP absolutely FREE! Woo Hoo!

Unfortunately those wonderful 4 roll packs of Cottonelle have long since disappeared from Kroger's shelves... but alas, I have found them once again!!!

Walmart has picked up where Kroger has dropped off... 4 roll packs of Cottonelle!

Cottonelle.com allows each of us to print two $1 off coupons per month on their site! That's 8 FREE rolls of Cottonelle TP my friends!

So if you have been staring longingly at your last 4 pack of Cottonelle- afraid to unwrap its wonderfulness beacuse it may very well have been your final pack, or if you have begun rationing "squares per flush" to hold on just a bit longer to the belovedly FREE Cottonelle, or if (like me) you are trying desperately to de-snob yourself from you FREE Cottonelle and succumb to tolerating the FREE Angel Soft... (I'm being brutally honest here friends) than join the ranks who are headed to Walmart for the GOOD STUFF!!! (Hmm, that sounds funny!)

May there be happy heinies everywhere!!!

PS: FREE Angel Soft TP is available at Kroger! Watch your Sunday papers for $.50 off coupons that will be doubled at Kroger- scoring you 4 FREE rolls of Angel Soft.

Another Success Story!!!

From an email...

Coupon Clipper: I absolutely love your info you put out for your readers on a daily basis. These daily readings have really been helpful in my pursuit of saving my family money. Yeah!!

Anyways, I wanted to let you know that my local Kroger's store was having the triple coupon deals this past weekend. I was thrilled with shopping!! I loaded up my shopping cart with items I knew I would be getting for free! It was a fun-filled shopping trip. Overall, I used 46 coupons for a total OOP of $9.29. This was a savings of $96.65. I love FREEBIES!!

Then, I ventured over to Wal-Mart where I picked up more FREEBIES and loaded up on the Rollback savings of Olay bar soap and the Glade Sense & Spray kits along with the Airwick Freshmatic Kits which were only $5 and I used a $4 off coupon. Gotta love that!

Me: Triple coupons... lucky (Ohio) Duck!!!

Q & A

From an email...

Coupon Clipper: WOW - I'm truly amazed at how you continually save big $$ at the grocery store. How do you do it? I live in a small town called St Paris, Ohio, I have a question to ask you about Kroger.

Say I went to purchase a PACE salsa product listed at $1.99 each. I use my $4.00 off coupon. I had a frustrating time with this last night.

The customer service manager said I couldn't use my $4 coupon that it would actually be reduced to $1.99 even though its a manufacturer's coupon listed as $4 off. Could you help me out on this? The same thing happened when I used a $3.50 coupon off of a bag of Purina cat food priced at $1.99.

The manager stated that the cashier would write in the correct product amount. I have yet to see a cashier do this since I was previously over at Wal-Mart picking up another PACE product and used my $4 off coupon with no problems.

It was a VERY, VERY, VERY bad experience at Kroger which I totally felt criticized for trying to save a buck. The cashier made me feel so uncomfortable that my total wasn't what I had added up since she was adding coupon figures back on my bill that I had the manager VOID out the transaction and actually had them re ring my order. It was significantly lower of course and during all of this the cashier LOST 2 of my coupons which she said I lost.

I was beyond frustrated and was about to burst into tears. I know this is NOT how couponing is supposed to be. I was at the register for a total of 45 minutes. Ugh!!

Me: First of all, I'd be on the phone with customer service- not with your store but at the corporate level. Using coupons is savvy shopping NOT illegal or stealing!!! When you call customer care, make sure to let them know how long you stood in line, specific rude comments that were made to you, the time of day you shopped, how the employees made you feel/ look in front of other customers, and ask if you may be sent a gift card for the value of the 2 coupons that the cashier lost. Be kind and adamant!

Secondly, I'd find a new Kroger. I'm in the process of finding a new Kroger close to home (Super Kroger is 45 minutes away) because the daytime cashiers are so terrible at my local store! It will be well worth an extra few minutes in the car for me to find a store with kind employees.

The truth about coupon overage (when your coupon value is worth more than the product) is that it is allowed at some stores and not at others. Sometimes it is even just allowed by some cashiers while other cashiers will not allow it.

Walmart, hands down, is the only store that I know of that allows overage all of the time.

I personally receive overage most often when I stack a store's coupon with a manufacturer's coupon. For example, last week I purchased Bic Soliel razors at Walgreens. They were on clearance for $3.59 and I had a $2 manufacturer's coupon and a $2 store coupon for Walgreen's monthly booklet, the Easy Saver Catalogue (pick one up in the entryway of the store.). SO my coupons totaled $4, but my product was $3.59.

Most of the grocery stores do not allow coupon overage- it is more of a rarity at the grocery store to even have high value coupons.

If I were you, I'd stick with Walmart for Pace and cat food. You did the right thing by trying to explain yourself to the cashier and manager- too bad they weren't interested in listening.

Please don't let this rotten experience hinder you from keeping up on your clipping and saving. There is an art to coupon spending and it sounds like you are well on your way to understanding- keep up the great work!

Inexpensive Kraft Salad Dressing

Sorry about the silence, we were out of town and my son is not feeling well, again.

Last night I made a quick stop at Walmart to pick up some nearly FREE salad dressing. Walmart sells their 16 ounce bottles of Kraft for $1.58 everyday. Kraft has a $1.50 coupon in last weekend's paper- making each of these dressings $.08 each! Woo Hoo!

I'm ready for warm weather and pasta salads- some of these dressings will be perfect!

Buyer Beware

From an email...

Coupon Clipper: I don't know if you want to post this on your blog, but I did not find some of the deals at Walmart that were on the Mommysnacks site (affiliate site, I clicked on it from her site).

Here is what I did NOT find:
Cascadian Farms Purely Steamed Veg: Fowlerville one must not carry?
Muir Glen canned tomatoes: Fowlerville one must not carry?
Ludens: Not on sale Rolaids: Not on sale, but still Free with coupon if you get smaller size
Gillette Shampoo for men: Sale is $3.50 NOT $2.50
Schick Disp.razors: not on sale Sanihands for kids: couldn't find

Me: Bummer! I hate when that happens.

I personally am not a fan of Walmart... I have heard negative info on how they treat their employee's since the death of Sam Walton (founder of WM), so I rarely shop there. I do, however, understand that Walmart is a one stop shopping type of store with some of the best local pricing- and so many people still like to shop there.

I prefer to shop at stores that double coupons, as I am much more likely to get FREE items every week!

Also, Walmart does not send out a weekly flyer advertising their prices for grocery/ household items to my home, like Meijer and Kroger do. When I have a flyer in hand I am guaranteed the flyer's price once I am in the store.

Sales for chain stores are sometimes regional- meaning if a blogger states on his/her site that Crest toothpaste is selling for $1.99 - that may be the sale price in Kentucky... or California... wherever he/she may be blogging from, but here, in Michigan the same chain store may not be running the same sale- so the Crest will still be $2.49 or the regular pricing.

All of this to say- the main reason that I shop in the stores that I do is because I have proof in my hand of the 'for sure' sales to plan my shopping around.

I'm sorry that you experienced being misled. That stinks! You can call Walmart Customer Service and ask them how they set their sales for different regions.

Coupon Clipper: I hope my e-mail didn't come across like I was complaining or anything, I just wanted to save someone else time by not going after the same deals - I feel bad if it came across that way at all. (Me: Nope! Not at all! And I can handle complaints- I probably have the same ones!!!!)

However, despite some Walmart confusion, I still walked out of there with 5 free items and I am up to $100 of savings this week!

Again - thanks for the tips! I haven't had this much fun shopping in a long time.

I love helping the family financially even though I don't bring in income - it is a great feeling

Me: To be honest, feeling like a 'financial team player' is one of the BIGGEST reasons that I began using coupons again. I also am an at home Mom without an income- but the way that I shop, rebate and donate more than makes up for the lack of income!

...And- about Walmart- I didn't think that you were a stinker... I would have felt the same way- I HATE hearing about all of the awesome deals and loot that other people are scoring and having it NOT be( fair) the same in my store!

Way to go on saving $100 - this is just the beginning!!!
