Sunday Survey

I was talking with a friend who just went strawberry picking for the very first time this week- and she LOVED it! I have a (not so) secret dream of owning a U-Pick strawberry farm someday... so I feel like I'm just dippin' my toes in the water with my little patch!

Do YOU enjoy picking fresh produce? Are you a U-Picker or a Farmer's Marketeer (Where do YOU pick?)? If so, what are your favorite picks?

I plan to pick strawberries this week! The plants I planted didn't grow, so my husband bought me a couple plants so I could harvest "something". I have had ONE strawberry... and we split between the 5 of us. Considering how much money we put into starting a garden this year...that was one very expensive strawberry!!!

Oh Amy, I'm so sorry! I know how much hard work you put into your garden! I hope it was just the strawberries that didn't take!

We pick strawberries at DeGroots in Gregory (Livingston co). Very family friendly and much more economical than the farmer's markets.

LOL - I might try picking this year with Ray and Sam (ages 4 and 3). The last time I went was when Sam was a month old and Ray was almost 2. My girlfriend had similar-aged children and so we went together.

Uh...WHAT were we thinking??????

I've been wanting to go to a nearby strawberry patch to pick enough for all sorts of goodies, but, alas, on the days I had an opportunity to go, the weather didn't cooperate. Now I fear strawberry pickin' season is almost over.
Maybe I'll set my sights on blueberries.

We used to be part of a wonderful CSA (before we moved) and we LOVED picking up our produce from the farm and LOVED picking our own berries, edamame, herbs, flowers, tomatoes, pumpkins, green & yellow beans, etc. It was such a great thing for my children and me. We also love picking blueberries!

We picked 20.5 lbs today at Spicers. Can't wait to make can strawberry syrup, jam, preserves, and then flash freeze some. At 1.29 a lb they were too good to pass up.

Ellen

Carrie - how do you make strawberry syrup? Is it something that you can store on a shelf or does it have to be stored in the fridge?

Carrie,
I would LOVE to have you as my neighbor! You are a wealth of knowledge!!!
