Tutorial Tuesday

Tutorial Tuesday's design is to visually share money saving food preparation techniques along with easy and inexpensive recipes. This week I'm happy to share the recipe of homemade yogurt. I found this recipe through 365crockpot.blogspot.com

I was tickled to find a super simple recipe for making yogurt... my son (2) has been scarfing it lately!

Ingredients:
8 cups of whole milk and 4-6 ounces of plain yogurt


First, begin by placing 8 cups of milk in you crock pot.

Turn the crock pot on low and allow your milk to warm for 2.5 hours.

After 2.5 hours have passed, unplug your crock pot and just let it sit for 3 hours.

*Side note: start to finish takes 13.5 hours, but it is VERY little work. My advice is to either begin first thing in the morning, or 6 hours before you will head to bed.

After 5.5 hours have passed, remove two cups of warm milk.

Mix 4-6 ounces of plain yogurt together in a bowl with the two cups of milk...

Either use a fork or a whisk to combine the milk and yogurt. Pour all of the contents back into the crock pot and stir well.

Lastly, cover your entire crock pot with a thick towel. Allow 8 hours to pass...

And you get yogurt!!!

My recipe yields about 10 cups of plain low-fat yogurt. Its crazy... it looks like yogurt and smells like yogurt- but it definitely needs to be sweetened and have fruit added to it! I'm not sure that I care for it, but I'm not a huge yogurt lover!

*Tip, if you would like to continuously make your own yogurt, reserve half a cup to use as a 'starter' in your next batch!

8 cups of whole milk (for best results) *8 cups is actually a half gallon, so you could save yourself some measuring and just purchase a small jug!
4 ounces of plain yogurt (I used all 6 from my little cup)
A crock pot (at least 4 quarts)
A large beach towel (weird request, but necessary!)

I know you state whole milk works best - would skim work? I ask because I have 5 1/2 gallons left after the Kroger deal last week - got what we would use then got sick - I guess it wouldn't hurt to try!

I am totally going to try this. I normally buy plain yogurt anyway, I would love to make it. A good way to sweeten it is add baby food fruit. It gives it a lot of flavor without all the sugar. My kids love it. When you kids grow out of baby food but you can get it free here and there, it's a great way to use it up. Baby food and plain yogurt, who would have thought.

I also like that you add sugar to it when you make it and the vanilla flavors it nicely. I actually often add a bit extra vanilla just cause I like more flavor. Oh and for easy fruit flavoring, eliminate the sugar and add a can of pie filling or just some flavored jello.

I was excited when I saw this because I usually make my own yogurt! I got a yogurt maker as a gift from my mom - she found it at a thrift store for 5 bucks, and thought I should have it. A yogurt maker is just a heater that stays at a constant 110 degrees. I heat up my milk (I've been using skim, it works fine. And for some reason makes slightly thicker yogurt..) on the stovetop until it reaches 180 degrees. Then let it cool to 108-112 degrees and add the starter mixed with a small amount of the milk. Then I put it in the covered containers that go with my heater and heat for 6-8 hours. Then refrigerate.

It is definitely plain yogurt, and tends to be bitter if you aren't used to the taste. But adding honey makes it taste great. If you like thicker yogurt, you can drain it with a strainer lined with a paper towel, which will remove most of the whey (liquid in the yogurt). Drained yogurt is also called Greek yogurt, and tastes amazing a creamy. The more you drain it, the thicker it will be. The thickest drained yogurt is called yogurt cheese, which is like cream cheese but lighter. It tastes amazing on toast with honey or jam!
