Thought Provoking Thursday

I love for my son to enjoy the simple things in life... family time, bug watching, long walks and imaginative play!

A few months ago, when I was able to score a sweet deal on white rice ($1/4 pounds), I picked up a couple of bags along with some rubbing alcohol and food coloring, and I made Bo a big batch of colored rice!

It was simple, I mixed 1 cup of rice with 1 teaspoon of rubbing alcohol and 12ish drops of food coloring! Bo honestly has spent HOURS playing in his rice box!

***Note: you must allow your rice to dry completely before playing, and be aware that the colored rice will leave a dust on your child's hands- but it washed off easily! I like to have Bo play with the rice box indoors on a beach towel, or outside!

Bo especially loves playing in his rice with his mini plastic animals, match-box cars, silverware and the plastic lids that I have been saving for 'dishes' for pretend rice food!

I also decided to make Bo some bubbles- not because they are expensive to purchase, but because we tend to spill MASS quantities in a single sitting, and this will help ensure that there is always more!

Recipe: (courtesy of smashedpeasandcarrots.com)
8 cups water
2 cups Dawn
3/4 cup of light corn syrup (to make the bubbles last longer)

*It is highly recommended that you allow your bubble solution to meld together (maybe overnight) before use. I was amazed that the bubbles landed on the grass and didn't pop for a long time, Bo loved the chance to run over and stomp on them!

  1. Laura - Bo is so amazing. My kiddos would have the rice dumped out in no time flat.

  3. I filled up my sons sandbox with colored rice last yr. It cost about $25 for how much rice I bought but it was totally worth it. So much less mess!!

  4. We have a bean box. I filled it up with all kinds of dried beans and little plastic toys and treasures to find. It is now entertaining them all from 1 to 11! Simple pleasures!

  5. Love the rice idea...and I agree, I think Bo is rather unusual in that he doesn't dump it everywhere.

    and explaining all about that.
