Target Gift Card Challenge Update:

I'm winding down the last few remaining dollars on my Mother's Day gift card and challenge. I received a $20 Target gift card and a challenge to at least double the cards' spending potential...

Item Total: $39.02
Spent: $2.02 & Saved: $37.00
37 coupons spent
21 FREE items

To date I have now spent $16.33 and I have been able to purchase $348.54 worth of goodies.

Hmmm, I wonder what can be purchased with the remaining $3.67!!!

Kroger Again?

Embarrassingly, I needed to know if the Herbal Essences deal that I posted about earlier would be accepted... and it was! My preference is to do the deals myself to make sure they work before I send my faithful readers on a wild goose chase... I often am disappointed by other deals that I read about online that are not so great in my neck of the woods!

Grocery Total: $39.15
Spent: $.50 & Saved: $38.65
12 coupons spent
12 FREE items

OK, so I ran to my local Kroger last night... even after Super Krogering... because I had a hunch that the Propel waters were included in the purchase 10 items receive a $5 discount promotion and I had collected 8 tear pad coupons for $.50 (doubled to $1) making the Propels at the very least FREE. I brought a few more coupons for other participating products to push my total for participating products up to 10.

I lucked out and found 3 packages of the Playtex hand saver gloves that I have been stalking for weeks. These were selling for $1 and I had $1 coupons for each of them!

So... I purchased 10 qualifying items- but I had coupons to make all 10 of my products FREE BEFORE the $5 discount, so I picked up some banana's and 3 packages of baby Goldfish crackers (thanks Aunt Kelly for getting Bo hooked on these!!!) and spent my $5 in products that I wanted to purchase.

Grocery Total: $25.15
Spent: $1.46 & Saved: $23.69
19 coupons spent (my Propel's doubled)
and 13 FREE items including the Propels, the gloves, 2 goldfish and the bananas.

Super Kroger

Well, I decided at the last minute to sneak to Super Kroger on Sunday... a quick in and out trip, only 40 minutes!

Grocery Total: $122.74
Spent: $12.20 & Saved $110.54
66 coupons spent
32 FREE items

FREE items include: Crest, Reach floss, Dannon drinkables & crush cups (thanks Carrie for the heads up!!!), Coke (replacement coupon for purchasing an expired pack), Oscar Mayer hot dogs from a home mailer, Velveta single serve's from a home mailer, Suave deodorant, Lawry's marinade from coupons & a rain check and Bounty paper towels.

I was seriously flying through the store just picking up the items that I knew would be FREE, plus I was trying to purchase 10 participating items to receive an additional $5 off of my bill. I grabbed 2 Kleenex boxes (like the 16 boxes that I purchased 2 weeks ago weren't enough... they were my fillers!), 6 boxes of Kellogg's cereal, and 2 Kraft dressings. When I was checking out my cashier and I realized that my Kraft dressing coupons and my Kellogg's coupons were expired... so I accidentally still purchased the Kleenex... at almost $4 for 2 boxes... YIKES! Two weeks ago I purchased 8 boxes for that same amount of money... so I may take them back, although I feel a bit silly returning boxes of Kleenex!

I learned something new at SK... I spent the (4) $1 Catalina's (store reward money that prints like a coupon next to your receipt) that I had earned from purchasing my Kleenex two weeks ago, and since it is a manufacturer's coupon... I received double the reward... or $2 for my $1 Catalina! Woo Hoo!

I also had a few coupons that we not scanning properly, so my cashier had to manually enter them into the register. My cashier was entering them as "store coupons" instead of 'manufacturer coupons,' which might not seem like a big deal... but store coupons NEVER double, so I missed out on some discounts... bummer!

Grocery Game Plan: Meijer

My favorites for the week of July 26, 2009

10 for $10 + the 11th item is FREE

Kraft BBQ sauce, Any valid coupons? I spent all of mine!

Starbucks Java Chip cup, use $2 coupon and either purchase 2 for FREE or 1 plus $1 in coupon overage?

Hormel pepperoni, $.75 coupon

Land O Lakes spreadable butter, use $.40 coupon - is doubled to $.80 off!

Warm Delights, use $.50 coupon... doubled they are FREE (this one is for you Heidi!!!)

Other deals this week:

Ziplock bags and containers 25% off, use coupons from this weeks paper

Activia/Danactive yogurt $1.99, use $1 coupons (especially the ones that will expire 7/31) from this weeks paper

Manwich (my boys LOVE this... thanks SK shopping friends!) $1/can

Blueberries are $1.50/pint

Corn of the cob is $.20/ear

Grocery Game Plan: Kroger

My favorite deals for the week of July 27th 2009

This week there is a deal going on for specific Proctor & Gamble (P&G) items... the deal states that you must purchase 4 qualifying items in one transaction to receive a $4 discount on your purchase. The ad did not state a limit to the number of discounts that you may receive per transaction, so I assume that you may do as many as you have coupons for.

My favorite (least expensive) deals for this P&G special offer are the shampoo/conditioner deals.

1. Aussie (I think that Aussie products may be the same scent as Heaven!) shampoo/conditioners are on sale for $2.99, and when you purchase 4 items you will receive $4 off...

Purchase 4 products = $11.96
minus $4 discount = $7.96
minus $4 for (2) $2 off coupons from yesterday's paper = $3.96 for all 4 products!!!

2. Herbal Essence shampoo/conditioner is on sale for $2.99 as well this week.

Purchase 1 shampoo, 1 conditioner, and two styling products = $11.96
minus $4 discount = $7.96
minus $5.98 for the 2 purchase any shampoo/conditioner get a FREE styler coupon from yesterday's paper = $1.94 for all 4 products!

*There are also HE $1 coupons that expire on 7/31... and I think that you may be able to combine both the FREE item coupons (2) and the $1 coupons (2) in keeping with the one coupon per item purchased (unless the coupon states otherwise like $1 off two...).

Speed Stick & Lady Speed Stick deodorant are on sale for $.88/stick and there were $.75 coupons in this weekends paper.

Kroger has some pretty good prices on produce this week, but beware as their produce spoils very quickly!

School Supplies

OK, so it feels like summer (minus the humidity, but I'm not complaining!!!) and we are weeks and weeks away from the start of the school year... but it would be wise (and frugal) to begin purchasing your kid's supplies NOW!

Annually, mid July hosts the beginning of the school supply wars between some of our most competitive local stores... Target, Meijer & Wal-Mart try to tempt you into their stores, Staples and even the drug stores like CVS and Walgreen's have luring tactics as well. What is a savvy shopper to do?

1. Don't nickle and dime yourself to death!!! Who cares if the note books that your kids need are $.02 less expensive at Walmart this week... if Walmart is not on your list of stores to shop at this week... pick up your (still deeply discounted) supplies where you have intended on shopping.

2. Over purchase!!! What I mean to say is think worst case scenario for the entire year... If your third grader has been asked to purchase 6 folders for school, than purchase 12-18 so you can replace them (cost effectively) throughout the year.

3. Party? Think of school supplies like crayons for party favors for a February birthday... or as great additions to a coloring book for an older sibling when a new baby has been born and you are bringing a gift for the baby... think of purchasing your Scotch tape NOW to wrap your Christmas gifts with!

4. Donate!!! See if your church, local organization or local school district is collecting items for kids who desperately need your assistance! Who can resist purchasing a (couple) box of perfect tipped Crayola's?

Here is another tip for purchasing backpacks for your kids this year...

This week if you buy $10 in any combination of Kellogg's, Keebler, Sunshine, and Eggo products, you get $10 off any backpack instantly at check-out. In addition, this week the backpacks are on sale Buy One Get One for $1. So I got $75 worth of backpacks for $41. If you were picking backpacks for littler kids, you could certainly choose cheaper ones and spend a lot less out of pocket. I was getting one for my daughter who is going to High School in the fall, so she needed a bigger/nicer one. But I was thrilled to get the one for my son for $1, and get $10 off the expensive one. Plus, $2 in Meijer Cash for every $30 you spend. (Thanks Becky!)

Coupon Lingo

Coupon Clipper: I took your coupon class a couple of weeks ago, and have been having a bunch of fun saving money and learning how to play 'coupon' games :) I have two questions for you. The first is how to stack coupons at Target.

I have some coupons for Charmin's TP, I have a 2 MF coupon for $0.25 off and 2 target coupon for $0.50 off, and then another MF coupon that says save $1.00 when you buy 2 Charmin's. So can I use all of the coupons on just 2 packages or do I need to buy 4 packages to use all of those coupons?

Me: The rule for stacking coupons is one coupon per item... ONE Manufacturer coupon (unless the coupon states a discount for two, for example: save $.50 on two...) per item + ONE Store coupon per item (unless the coupon discount states otherwise). If you were purchasing 2 packs of Charmin you may either use (2) $.25 Manufacturer coupons or (1) $1/2 packages Manufacturer coupon + (2) $.50 Target store coupons. ***FYI: the $1/2 Manufacturer coupon is the better purchase!

Coupon Clipper: The other question is regarding Walgreen's and how to use coupons there, it's been little bit of a learning curve for me :) So I understand that you have to have as many coupons as items, but my question is regarding the coupons that says something like $2 off 3 items...does that count as 1 coupon or 3 coupons? Still learning, but having fun and saving money :)

Me: If a coupon states save $2 by purchasing 3 items then you may use ONE coupon per set of three items that you purchase.

Grocery Shopping at Meijer

We were totally out of milk by 8am this morning so the Little Guy and I went shopping. My Lysol rain check was expiring (and from the looks of my recent Meijer trips it looks like I need more!!!) so I grabbed a few coupons and headed out.

If you have taken my coupon class then you are aware that I stalk the coupon printing (AKA: Catalina machines) while I am shopping! I also will peek at coupons on the ground... shameless I know! Well, it totally paid off today!

As I was walking in I found a Meijer coupon for $4 off of my next purchase between 8-2 & 8-31.

Later, when I was checking out the previous guest left his/her Catalina coupon hanging at the printer and it was for $2 off you next purchase (from General Mills) so I spent that when I was checking out...

Then, as I was leaving another U Scan machine had a $2 off your next purchase coupon hanging from the printer as well... so keeping my eyes open made me $8 today!!!

Grocery total: $59.94
Spent: $19.80 & Saved: 40.14
21 coupons spent
8 FREE items (Lysol)

Target Gift Card Challenge Update:

For the sake of my new readers, I'll quickly recap my gift card challenge. (Feel free to view all of my Target gift card challenge posts under "Target" on the right hand column of my blog...)

For Mother's Day my husband's grandma gave me a $20 Target gift card and a wink... she challenged me to purchase at least (ha, ha, ha!) $40 worth of merchandise- doubling the gift cards value...

So, I still had $6.69 worth of gift card burning a hole in my wallet... I have already purchased $260.75 worth of goodies, but... I do love to peruse the aisles at Target.

Sunday evening I headed out just before close (FYI: If you are in line right at closing time they dim the lighting- how romantic!!!) to swoop in and score some freebies!

Purchase total: $48.77
Spent: $1.00 & Saved: $47.77
37 coupons spent
33 FREE items

*FREE items include the dish washer rinse from a home mailer, Nexcare band aid online printable, Target Kashi cereal coupon found on Target.com, J&J coupons from the paper.

New TOTALS
SPENT: $14.31
SAVED: $309.52
$5.69 left to spend!!!

Grocery Shopping at Kroger

Grocery Total: $51.22
Spent: $20.91 & Saved: $30.31
23 Coupons used

I needed to pick up a few items to make Dave (my husband) his favorite dessert for his birthday and I was hoping to pick up a few boxes (OK, a year's supply) of Kleenex. Check!

I hate to pay full price for anything, let alone something to wipe boogers on and toss directly into the trash... but we cannot live without Kleenexes!

Rarely do I EVER see a tissue sale, so when I can get 'the good stuff' for less than 75% of the original price, I stock up. To be honest, the last time I purchased tissues it was early January when Target was liquidating their Christmas surplus. I scooped up a few wintery themed boxes... but now that it is warm outside penguin decor boxes look silly.

With Kleenex included in the Mega Sale this week at Kroger, I spent my $.50/2 boxes of Kleenex coupons in conjunction with my other items to receive the $5 discount or extra $.50 off per item.

This week these 80 count boxes are on sale (down from $2.09/box) for $1.79/box. After the Mega Sale discount (purchasing 10 qualifying items) another $.50 is removed from your purchasing price= $1.29/box.

The $.50/2 coupon (from last weekend's paper) magically doubles at Kroger- allowing an extra $.50 off of each box = $.79/box.

But when you purchase 4 boxes in the same transaction you receive a Catalina (store reward money) for $1 off of your next purchase. (Lowering your box cost by another $.25... or really making each box cost $.54, or 75% off of regular retail!!!)

Could you use a few boxes?

Grocery Shopping at Meijer

Grocery Total: $69.71
Spent: $21.51 & Saved: $48.20
22 Coupons used
1 FREE item (the cookie dough.)

My Electrosol coupons were burning a hole in my coupon box, so I spent them last night. I was able to purchase each box for $.50 by combining my Manufacturer coupons and the Meijer Mealbox coupons. I think I have about 9 months worth of tabs... yay!

Rite Aid Rebates:

Coupon Clipper: I have a question for you on how Rite Aid works with their rebate checks. I see the paper says limited to 1 check. Does this mean per transaction per item? In other words can I do multiple different items that qualify for rebate check in one transaction and still submit them all for the rebate?

Second can I split transactions (for the same item)and get and receive the rebate for the multiple items.

Any help you can provide on this will be greatly appreciated.

Me: Rite Aid allows ONE rebate per item per address per month.

For example, you may purchase one tube of Colgate for the entire month that is eligible for the rebate. All other tubes of Colgate purchased that month will not qualify for a rebate.

If you split your transactions, meaning you purchase qualifying items on more than one receipt, you must enter the receipt information on ALL of the receipts necessary to receive your rebate.

For example, say you are purchasing 5 packs of Huggies diapers to receive the voucher for a sixth pack FREE... you could purchase each pack of diapers separately and the enter the receipt information on all five receipts to receive your FREE voucher.

I personally just write rebate on the top of all of my receipts that I am eligible to receive rebates for, then, at the end of the month, I enter all of my receipts at the same time.

Doubling "Do NOT Doubles"

Coupon Clipper: Just wondering. Does the Super Kroger still double the coupons that say "Do Not Double or Triple?"

Me: Here is the low down for doubling DND's:

If the coupon has a small 5 before the bar code numbers the coupon will automatically double at any store (including Super Kroger) that offers doubled coupons.

If your coupon has a small 9 before the bar code numbers than the coupon will not double unless the cashier manually doubles the coupon- which many stores do not allow.

Electrasol Dishwasher Tabs

About three times a year the makers of Electasol dishwasher tabs places $2.50 (yep! Two fifty!!! How exciting) off coupons in the Sunday paper. This weekend we are supposed to receive these wonderful coupons in the Smart Source insert!!!

My personal advice would be to purchase a few more papers than you usually do. The industry standard (well, my advice anyway) is to purchase one Sunday newspaper per person in your family, this allows for quick and effective stockpiling (purchasing multiples of the exact same item) for the quantity that your family most likely consumes.

This weekend it would be wise to purchase above and beyond (if you own a dishwasher) your normal number of newspapers.

Boxes of Electrasol tabs usually contain 20 tabs, but Target often sells the bonus boxes with 20% more tabs- or 25 washes worth.

To make this coupon even better (catch your breath!!!) Target and the drug stores usually will have a sale bringing the price from around $4.59/box down to at least $3.50 and as low as $3. That's a really good deal!

I have yet to experience this myself, but a friend of mine (thanks Erika) shared with me that Dollar General sells (there might only be 12 in the box... I don't know) boxes of Electrasol tabs for $2.50 everyday. I'll definitely be checking my local Dollar General to see if that is indeed the case!

So... word to the wise, stockpile the papers tomorrow, purchase EARLY in case your news stand sells out (this NOTORIOUSLY happens) and don't settle for boxes with a sale price of higher than $3. Electrasol will go on sale before the coupon expires! ***If you are dead out of detergent, spend one coupon and hold out for the better sale!!!

Just sharing the love!!!

Pizza

I posted earlier in the week about my purchasing fresh pizza dough at a local Italian market.
This is the pizza that I made! By my calculations it only cost $1.95!!! And it was DELICIOUS!!!

This sure beats ordering a Jet's Pizza for $12!

If you live near Middlebelt and 7 Mile stop by Cantoro's Market and try making your own pizza from their dough!

KMart & Kroger

To say that I have been very disappointed in KMart's Super Doubles this week would be an understatement! I shopped three times before I actually made a purchase!

At KMart I (finally) purchased (4) 4 roll packs of Angel Soft TP, (4) 3 roll packs of Sparkle PT, (2) boxes of fruity Cheerios (I had assumed that they were included in the GM 4/$6 deal- nope!) and the jar of Peter Pan (I spent a $1 coupon I received in the mail).

I had planned on using a $5/$25 coupon that I found in the cart at my first empty handed trip, but I was not allowed to use this coupon in conjunction with my manufacturer coupons being doubled. I was bummed- so much red tape with the KMart Super Doubles! I paid with a gift card that I was given from another really bad shopping experience. So at least it didn't cost me anything!

If I wasn't getting such great deals and FREE stuff, I'd skip KMart all together!

The apples and marshmallows were from Kroger. I could have paid $2.59 for large Jet Puffed marshmallows, or $1 (10/$10) for the small Jet Puffed marshmallows... and since they were for Rice Krispy treats. I could NOT have purchased the store brand for less than the mini Jet Puffed.

So all in all I spent $5.22 for these products!

Expiring Register Rewards...

I had $15 in Register Rewards (Walgreen's money) that were nearly expired, so I popped into Walgreen's today.

This week's sales flyer seemed pretty disappointing to me (nothing really good that I needed/wanted to roll my reward money into purchasing...) so I decided to purchase a bottle each of Organix shampoo and conditioner and a Goody ouchless headband... all three of these items are offering rebates.

I needed to purchase each of these items in separate transactions because I will need to mail the original receipt into the company to receive my rebate check. (PLUS: you will need two addresses to mail both of the Organix rebates.)

I took the hang tag rebate forms off of the bottles of shampoo/conditioners, and the rebate form for the headband prints as a Catalina coupon after the headband is scanned. (HINT: go to coupons.com and print off a $1 Goody coupon.)

I actually spent gift card money for the extra $1 that the shampoo/conditioners cost me, and I also used the GC for the tax... plus my $15 in Register rewards, and I am looking forward to receiving $18 in rebates.

I always try to keep my eyes open for ways to turn my store reward money into cash. Year to date I have received $470 in rebates!

Grocery Shopping at Meijer

Grocery Total: $51.00
Spent: $18.31 & Saved: $32.69
14 coupons spent
5 FREE items... Lysol spray cleaners

I used 2 rain checks today, one for Lysol and one for Aunt Millies bread. I also stopped at an Italian bakery and picked up this white blob :). The blob is actually fresh pizza dough that I paid $1.49 for and I can't wait to eat it!

I felt a little 'nakie' shopping with so few coupons, but I basically was just stocking up on Lysol and pasta for this fall/winter (planning ahead and purchasing shelf stable items is a great way to save lots of money! Meijer store brand pasta normally sells for $1.16/box for the varieties of pasta that I purchased today... I saved more than 50%!)

What To Do?

I LOVE FREE item coupons... like this one from Oscar Mayer.

Sometimes it is very tempting to run out and spend a FREE item coupon right after it is received... but I have learned patience and restraint. You see, anytime between receiving this coupon and 7/31 (the expiration date) I am guaranteed a FREE package of hot dogs. BUT... if I hold out, I may find that Oscar Mayer hot dogs are on a BOGO (buy one get one FREE) sale- scoring me TWO FREE packages of hot dogs with just my FREE item coupon!!!

I also follow this rule with my BOGO coupons. If I have a BOGO coupon for a favorite brand of shampoo... I keep a watch out for that very same brand of shampoo to go on a BOGO sale before my coupon expires.

Even if I never hit a "Double Dip" sale to match my FREE item or BOGO coupons, it is worth the wait since I will still receive the coupon discount when my coupon is spent before its expiration date!

Personally, I LOVE holding out for "Double Dips!!!"

***In case you are wondering where I received this coupon... I registered with Oscar Mayer to receive this coupon a few weeks ago. Keep reading the blogs that I list on my right side bar (especially http://www.mommysnacks.net/) to find out about these special online offers!

Reflections

I began blogging and teaching coupon classes six months ago this week! I am amazed at how many peoples lives have been positively influenced by spending coupons just within the past 6 months! I has been so much fun meeting and even shopping with so many of you SYS readers! I cannot believe that 463 of you have taken my classes and helped to raise $3,710 for www.raincatchers.org!!! Woo Hoo!!!

Over the last six months I have tracked my own personal spending, and while I have spent $1,699.81, I have saved $11,061.02. I have spent 3,944 coupons and I have received 2,480 FREE items. There is a lot to learn from tracking spending habits... and I feel like I need to set a new goal for the second half of 2009.

I need to limit my needless spending: if I have at least a years supply of an item (like Ziploc bags for example) I need to not add to my stockpile if it means spending money (FREE is OK to add to my stockpile). This is still tricky for me... I LOVE to purchase just about anything for pennies on the dollar.

June 2009

WOW! I really didn't pay too much attention to my spending in June... here are my totals:

Spent: $293.16

Saved: $1,471.44

Coupons spent: 580

FREE items: 360

Hmmmmm, I'd better buckle down for next month! I know I can spend much less and save much more!

Posting Again Soon...

I'm very sorry for the infrequent posting these last few days, I have needed to tend to my house and my gardens and I have taken some much needed family time! I will begin posting again tomorrow, and I will also work hard at answering all of my emails that have piled up. Thanks for your understanding!
