Oh Target...

Oh, Target... I have a LOVE/HATE relationship with you!!!

This morning I ran into Target to pick up a few deals. All of these items had manufacturer's coupons and Target store coupons- I was geeked. I kind of dread selecting a cashier at cash out time. Most (at my store) are extremely uneducated in how to redeem coupons. Unfortunately I always need to have a manager's OK to process all of my coupons. I always plan on having extra time spent at the register.

I try my best (although I am not perfect!!!) not to let these long, and often rude conversations with store employee's & managers ruffle my feathers. Slips of paper should NOT be a cause for me to become unkind. I do however have a hard time finding a kind way to say "I'm going home to call corporate!" (Any suggestions?) I do, however, like to give warning that I will call, and I am a woman of my word!

Today a carried a stack of coupons with me into the store. When I was cashing out the Target coupon for the easy mac which states purchase two easy mac products and receive $1 off your purchase was not accepted. I explained that I had used the coupon on the exact same transaction earlier in the week with no problem. The cashier (who is often a manager as well) called the floor manager over to look at the situation.

The manager looked over the coupon and asked the purchase price of the item. I purchased 4 easy mac's at $.89/each. The manager claimed that I would be receiving a product discount greater than the purchase price. I reminded him that it was for purchasing two products.

Long story short, the manager only looked at the picture on the coupon which shows a twin pack of easy mac- and he made his decision solely from the picture. I showed him the coupon wording, which properly states the redemption policy and what is required for the purchase.

I also had a Target coupon for $1 off any Quaker snack that showed a picture of a box of granola bars. Just one product out of a Quaker line of many products. I purchased 2 boxes of Quaker mini delights-with no problem EVEN though the picture on the Target coupon did not match the item I was purchasing.

You see, if the policy by the cashier/manager at my store was consistent AND it was following corporate coupon redemption policies- that I would submit to obeying the rules. Corporate has solid coupon redemption policies for this very reason!

I checked out and went home to call corporate. When I talked with a very kind customer service rep., she assured me that she would speak with the floor manager at my store... in fact, she allowed me to be on hold with her while she talked to my store. The lead manager from my store was very apologetic. I can return to the store and return my easy mac and re-purchase it with my coupons. It will not be a problem!

I was offered a $3 gift card for my time and trouble (aka: pain and suffering :)) - I said that I'd prefer that my store be coupon educated... we'll see if I still get that gift card :) !

My customer service rep. did tell me that the store manager who had "helped" me by not allowing the coupons- he will need to be re-educated in Target's coupon redemption policies... my husband called this the "Remedial Coupon Class!"

This story is just to share that every consumer has rights.

Consumers have the right to ask questions to the cashier, to remove items from their purchasing order if the cashier is not accepting the coupon, to ask for the manager's assistance in ringing up an order, to call customer service if unfairly or rudely treated.

Consumers do NOT have the right to speak the store employee's or managers unkindly, to get "snarky" when loading your bags, to raise your voice, to talk down to (making someone look/feel stupid), to make threats (like: "you'll be sorry you messed with me"), or to stomp off.

Little slips of paper should NEVER bring the worst behavior in us!

Saving a little bit of money on easy mac may seem like such a small deal in the grand scheme of life (and it is) but stores that do not honor corporate policies now, never will unless you ask for them to be enforced. My store really does give me a hard time each and every time I shop there. If it takes me calling corporate time and time again to create a level of fairness between my Target following their coupon rules and me following Target's coupon rules, then I am willing to be "that squeaky shopper." Hopefully I am creating better shopping enviorments for us all.

PS: I have Target's corporate on speed dial... just in case!

From an email...

Coupon Clipper: I have a game plan for tomorrow and had a couple more questions...but let me just tell you, I AM SUPER EXCITED =]

1)at cvs the ad shows band-aid brand prices starting at $1.00 and I have a $1.00 off coupon...so its free? (and just pay tax) ...i know it's probably a simple answer, but its weird wrapping my mind around free lol!

Me: Yep, but use your coupon in the trial size area for the $1 stuff. In fact there is a Johnson and Johnson band aid kit in a plastic box that sells for $1 in the trial size area... get that!

Coupon Clipper: 2)I also found a manufacturer coupon for $4.00 off schick intuition plus razor...at cvs its $8.99 with a $4.00 ecb, combined with my coupon I actually pay 99cents?? is that really true/correct/accurate? ...still in shock!

Me: You will pay $4.99 cash + $4 coupon- then you will get $4 ecb's back at the end of your transaction.

Coupon Clipper: 3)say the ad offers $5 ecb when I spend $15 on neutrogena products... do i have to make the $15 purchase in one transaction, or can it be... say... three separate $5 transactions before deadline that my cvs card will keep track of AND THEN I get the $5ecb?

Me: You can do as many transactions as you need to- to get up to $15 in products throughout the week. Your Extra Care Card tracks your spending for you.... actually the bottom of your receipt will tell you how much more you need to spend to get to a particular reward!

Coupon Clipper: 4)at Walgreen's the ad says nivea body wash $4.99-$4.99 register rewards = FREE ...i have a $1.00 coupon, would I still get the register rewards? ...they basically pay me $1.00?

Me: Yep! I LOVE being paid to shop!!!

Coupon Clipper: I am super excited to hit the stores tomorrow!!

Me: YAY! Girl, you have the BUG! Get out there and SAVE!!!

Q & A

From an email...

Coupon Clipper: I have two quick questions.

1. I think I pretty much have the hang of Register Rewards at Walgreen's, but I ran into one thing last week I was unsure of. My item cost $1.99 and they told me I couldn't use a $2 RR because it exceeded the price of what I was buying. I got a 30 cent travel Kleenex to make it work, but I would have rather not. Were they right???

2. I went to get the .99 chex mix at Target with the $1 off coupon and she told me I couldn't use it because it was more then the item. I asked her if she could mark down the coupon and she said no. I know it has worked for others, but is it up to the discretion of the check out person?

Me: When you have a problem with a cashier always ask for a manager.

The store does have the right to ask you to purchase an additional item to help with the coupon overage problem. Coupon overage is when your coupon value exceeds the price of the item that you are purchasing with the coupon.

an additional item "eats" up the overage. If you would prefer not to have coupon overage (in cases where you'd have to just spend a penny on something else in the store) than ask if you could have your coupon adjusted down to the price of the item being purchased with the coupon. Sometimes this is allowable- but it up to the discretion of the cashier/manager.

Red Beans & Rice

Red Beans & Rice is an easy and inexpensive meal that is surprisingly yummy and quick to make. (Thanks Beth for this recipe!)

The ingredients are simple and easy to find:
1 can of kidney beans, drained (I paid $.50/can)
1 large can of seasoned diced tomatoes (I paid $1/can)
1/8 C. bacon crumbles (I paid roughly $.25)
2 boil in the bag rice packets (1/2 box) (I paid $.25/half the box)
1 pkg kielbasa (I used turkey kielbasa) (I paid $1.50/package)
Serves 6 for $3.50
While my rice was boiling, I placed my beans, tomatoes and bacon on medium heat.

Then I sliced and quartered the kielbasa, and added it to the mix.

I raised the cooking temperature a bit and allowed the kielbasa to heat thoroughly while everything bubbled together at a slow boil.

Finally, I added the rice. Honestly, this dish may not be pretty to look at, but it is yummy!

Buying a turkey in April is as silly as going to Dairy Queen in January... in my opinion!

BUT... I would buy a Turkey in April if I was going to get it for FREE!

Unilever is running a promotion. If you purchase $40 worth of Unilever family products during April then Unilever will reimburse your Easter ham or turkey up to $20.

Dove, Axe Degree & Suave are all Unilever products, and I have scored $43 of them this month between rolling my store rewards at Walgreen's and my doubled coupons at Kmart. I did spend $4.50 + tax on my Unilever products, but I earned $24 in store rewards from my purchases.

The Turkey I purchased normally retails for $25.99 but it was on sale for $19.99. Plus, I had found a tear pad in Kroger about 6 months ago for $5 any Jennie-O Homestyle Turkey.

So I paid $14.99 for my $26 turkey, but I will receive $19.99 back in a rebate check!

I hope this turkey is yummy!

Here is a picture of the Unilever rebate form. It was only available in clippable form from the Sunday paper a few weeks ago. If you think that you may have enough Unilever products purchased this month to qualify for a rebate feel free to email me (through the blog email in the upper right hand corner of the homepage) I have a few extra copies!

Bath & Body Works

Just a couple of days ago I received and email from a new reader of Sharpen Your Scissors. She had been reading ALL of my back postings and was shocked at all of the goodies that I had scored from B&BW. I replied that every once in a while B&BW emails some of the most ridiculously awesome coupons out and that's when I stock up on my favorites!

This morning I received one of those emails: FREE lip gloss (up to $12) with ANY purchase!!!

Well, any purchase in my book means the least expensive items that I can find!!!

I picked up 10 1oz hand sanitizers for $1.50 each. **They are advertised 5/$5 but are regular price when you purchase them individually.

I am planning to tie a cute thank you note around the neck of each bottle for my Son's Sunday School teachers... they take such wonderful care of him each week!!!

Then... I received 10 ($72 worth) lip glosses to feed my lip gloss habit!
If you have never worn B&BW lip gloss- it is a MUST try!

I have decided that since our closest Costco shares the same parking lot with Meijer, I will be purchasing my Romain lettuce there. I was shocked to find that Costco sells Romain 6 packs for $3.49 and Meijer's price is $4.99. I think I'll just purchase two or three packages at a time since they last quite a while in our fridge. In the summer I will need to use our insulated bags for the lettuce, but for now, they were fine out in the car while I went into Meijer.

Yesterday I did purchase the Romain lettuce at Costco with our store rewards for using our Costco credit card, so they were FREE! Costco actually gave me $.31 when I cashed out- so that was a nice change!

I was thrilled that Meijer had several boxes of Electrosol in stock- I was sure that I'd need to get a rain check.

Target Cloth Bags

If you were lucky enough to score a FREE cloth bag from Target this weekend did you see the $2 Target coupon for the Energy Smart light bulbs? This past weekend also had a $1 manufacturer's coupon for the same light bulbs- and the standard everyday price per bulb starts a $3.69.

Stack your store and your manufacturer's coupons to receive a very inexpensive light bulb! Happy Targeting!

FREE+ Diaper Alert

Here are the coupons necessary to get a FREE+ package of diapers.

This week at Rite Aid Huggies diapers are on sale for $8.99 with a $3 rebate! I purchased a Bayer glucose monitor (to donate) that is on sale for $29.99 and I have a $30 off coupon.

Online (http://www.nba.com/media/cavaliers/riteaid_coupon_3.pdf) you may print a $5 off a $25 coupon... it is in pdf formatting so you may print as many as you'd like!!!

Glucose monitor $29.99 - $29.99 coupon = $0
Huggies diapers $8.99 - $1.50 coupon = $7.49
- $5 for the $5 off a $25 purchase (before coupons!!!)
=$2.49 + tax

$2.49- $3 rebate (submit online at www.riteaid.com) = -$.50

*Send you receipt (must have at least 5 rebatable items) to Caregiver's Marketplace (www.caregiversmarketplace.com) and receive another $.75 rebate

Total: $1.25 PROFIT for a package of diapers! Yay!

*******************************************************************

If diapers are NOT on your list of household needs :) Then consider doing the same type of transaction minus the diapers. I have purchased 40 count boxes of Rite Aid brand tampons instead of the diapers as the $5 in FREE merchandise from the $5 off a $25 purchase. The boxes of tampons sell for $4.99 so you would just need to pay the sales tax.

*If it seems weird to purchase something that you don't need yourself- just find someone who has the need and give the item to them! I donate my glucose monitors to a Food Pantry, but I have also read that Nursing Homes are thrilled to receive them as well.

I made a mad dash into Kroger this morning! I was excited to find that the Angel Soft toilet paper coupon was for the 4 package rolls- on sale 10/$10! I laughed out loud when I saw the 12 double rolls package ***ON SALE*** for $8.49... for 24 rolls~~~ I "bought" 28 rolls for NOTHING!!!! I heart coupons!!!!

Also, there are two unadvertised sales that I wanted to hit... the travel packs of Huggies wipes are 10/$10 and I used the $1 off any Huggies bath or body coupon and the $.75 off Huggies wipes- scoring 14 packages for $1.75, or less then the regular price of one package! I have no idea how we go through these so fast! I just love them!

I totally forgot to bring my Barilla pasta coupons with me- but Barilla boxes are on sale 4/$3 so you may even be able to score a bit of coupon overage!

***REMEMBER, if your stores are out of these products just ask for a rain check!

Woo Stinkin' Hoo!!!

Rebates

When I first began using coupons I couldn't figure out what all of the fuss about rebating was about. Sure, purchase an item and get at least some money back... big whoop!

WOW I sure was wrong!!!

At the end of last June I began rebating myself... and between June and December I received $300. Yay! We used that money to purchase Christmas presents since my husband had been out of work at the time.

I feel like there are three general types of rebaters...

1. The Recycling Rebater: the recycling rebater will set aside maybe $25 or so per year to purchase rebatable items, and when the checks come in, (s)he will recycle that money into purchasing another rebatable item. Thus recycing the $25 over and over while scoring some FREEBIES.

2. The Loaning Rebater: The loaning rebater allows stores or companies to borrow their money for a short while in return for their money being returned in a few weeks + FREE items. This rebater is willing to shell out all sorts of cash up front.

3. The Budgeted Rebater: the rebater on a budget will look for ways to include rebatable items into their weekly/ monthly shopping adventures. Scoring some FREE products while maintaining enough funds for the rest of the items necessary to run their household.

I personally am a Budgeted Rebater... I thrive on the thrill of the hunt AND getting the most bang for my buck! I always keep my eyes open to ways in which I will receive a nice little check in the mail. I heart good snail mail!

What kind of rebater are you?

Another Success Story!!!

From an email...

Coupon Clipper: I absolutely love your info you put out for your readers on a daily basis. These daily readings have really been helpful in my pursuit of saving my family money. Yeah!!

Anyways, I wanted to let you know that my local Kroger's store was having the triple coupon deals this past weekend. I was thrilled with shopping!! I loaded up my shopping cart with items I knew I would be getting for free! It was a fun-filled shopping trip. Overall, I used 46 coupons for a total OOP of $9.29. This was a savings of $96.65. I love FREEBIES!!

Then, I ventured over to Wal-Mart where I picked up more FREEBIES and loaded up on the Rollback savings of Olay bar soap and the Glade Sense & Spray kits along with the Airwick Freshmatic Kits which were only $5 and I used a $4 off coupon. Gotta love that!

Me: Triple coupons... lucky (Ohio) Duck!!!

Family Bonding Coupon Style!!!

I LOVE to hear how well each of you are now able to care for your families through using coupons! I am especially geeked when I hear how coupons are building family relationships:

*** I dragged my sister in law to your coupon class that I hosted (she was almost kicking and screaming). Since then, she and I have been emailing each other daily about the coupons and deals we've found. We'll meet at the stores and have coffee to trade coupons.

She's been married to my brother for 11years, and we have never bonded like we have over coupons!!

We went to my parents yesterday for Easter, my son's birthday and my niece's birthday. The extended family doesn't understand coupons "there's no such thing as a free lunch"...but they brought their saved coupons for us--it was like Christmas. My sister in law and I sat and clipped and traded coupons all afternoon.!!

My parents always give us a gift on Easter. This year my mom gave us girls a reusable bag filled with paper clips, reusable bags from all the stores, Walgreen's, rite aid, etc... a purse size coupon organizer, and electric scissors!!!. Only my mom, my sister in law and I knew how FUN, that present was. Everyone else rolled their eyes and played with their remote controlled helicopters. Who knew coupons could bring families together? LOL

***I wanted to pop in and praise you! Thanks so much!!! You along with a few other blogs I follow have truly saved my family hundreds of dollars!!! And I have gotten my mom, sisters, aunt, g-ma and cousin into clipping coupons as well. We enjoyed sitting around the table chit chatting after Easter dinner and clipping my left over coupons. I save them because I hate to just throw them away. : )

***After your coupon party about three months ago I have just gone crazy with coupons and deal seeking. (thank you) I have had a small coupon party for my family and my stock pile is already pretty big. I have been able to save my family so much money and have also been able to help friends, family and people in need.

I wanted to let you know I have started a blog and my husband thanks I am crazy (but I think secretly he likes it:) it iswww.123save.blogspot.comit is still very rough around the edges but my friends and family are all over the place and this is a much faster way then calling everyone of them every time I find a deal:)Love your opinion or advice.

Not too exciting this week...

Q & A

From an email...

Coupon Clipper: Thanks again for the class last week - it was so great to meet you and I was so happy to get some questions answered.

So - first - I went to CVS today and I did it!!!! I rolled my extra care bucks - WOO HOO! I had $10 in ECB from the Huggies Pull-Ups deal last week. I got two tubes of toothpaste, clean & clear face wash and some wipes on clearance (to get to $10). I paid 34 cents and I got $8 back in ecb - not too bad for a rookie ;) I also spent $26 at Kroger on a cart full of groceries - I love it :)

Me: YAY! You are cleaning up quite nicely at CVS!!!! And the grocery store!!!!

Coupon Clipper: Okay - so now for the bombardment of questions!!!! I'll try to spread them out a little (and just let me know when I get annoying!).

1. At CVS do you mostly only buy things that will get you extra care bucks back so that they are always rolling? What if you see something there that is a really great deal but doesn't get you ecb? Do you not use your ecb to pay for it and wait to buy things with your ecb that will get you more?

Me: I normally only purchase items that earn me more Extra Care Bucks (rolling), but I occasionally splurge on items that I may just want- or that I can purchase to keep other areas of my budget low, like a great deal on toilet paper or laundry soap.

Coupon Clipper: 2. How do you actually organize yourself at the grocery store??? I am getting better and better at organizing myself before I go, but at the store I still find myself getting flustered. I end up with coupons I'm using, but in different transactions - coupons I'm not using because the deal didn't end up being as good as I thoughts (prices not listed in flier) - coupons I'm not using and need rain checks for...etc!

Me: I keep myself organized while shopping by using my list as my guide. If I have a coupon for an item I write it on my list. I keep referencing my list as I shop. Every once in a while, when I have a MAJOR trip planed with several transactions, I will bring a couple of note cards with me. I have transaction #1, transaction #2 and transaction #3 written one per card. Then, as I am shopping, I paperclip my coupons for each transaction to the corresponding note card.

Coupon Clipper: 3. I tried using Uscan at Meijer last week and it was such a pain. The attendant had to come over and verify a ton of coupons. Is there any way to avoid that?

Me: I rarely leave the U-scan without help either. When I use the U-scan machines I make my time spent at the machines as easy as possible by first giving the attendant any rain checks that I may have. After scanning all of my items I first scan my manufacturer's coupons with specific savings ($.35 coupon). Then the attendant will need t help me with any buy one get one free coupons, free product coupons or mealbox coupons.

I wish it were easier- but with coupons save money and cost a little bit of time!!! :)

Q & A

From an email...

Coupon Clipper: Today at Walgreen's, I purchased 3 boxes of Kellogg's cereal, Skintamate shave gel, and a filler- Easter egg color kit. I had 3 manufac. coupons for the cereal from the Sunday paper and 2 RR's for $3.50 from Colgate toothpaste.

I was supposed to get RR's back for the cereal and shave gel, but they didn't come. The cashier said it was because I used the Colgate RR's. That's not right is it? Any ideas why this happened?

Me: That has happened to me before!

Walgreen's has a very complex coupon/Register Reward redemption process. Looping, spending a Register Reward on the exact same item and expecting a new Register Reward to print is forbidden at Walgreen's. Even spending a Register Reward from one product to receive a Register Reward for another product within the same parent company is forbidden.

Sometimes it is hard to tell- some companies make a vast array of products! I do have a couple of tips for if this happens to you in the future.

1. IMMEDIATELY return and re-buy the 'offending' products. Your cashier will keep your coupons and your RR's, but (s)he will give you the full value of the items. When you re-buy the products you will bay with just cash- no RR's that will prevent you next RR's from printing.

2. You can call the company that prints the RR's (Catalina Marketing). Calmly explain your situations and they may be able to cut you a check for your RR's. (888) 322-3814

Grocery Shopping at Meijer

Grocery total: $107.75
Spent: $8.44 & Saved: $99.31
57 coupons used
30 FREE items

I did use several mealbox coupons for my transactions (2). I used the U-scan machines and scanned my manufacturer's coupons BEFORE I asked the cashier for help with my mealbox coupons.

I also had a Meijer $6 off an $80 purchase that the U-scan cashier would not allow me to use, so I went to Customer Service to ask why it had not been accepted and she gave me $6 cash! Woo Hoo! It pays to ask questions!!!

Grocery Shopping at Meijer

Grocery Total: $47.34
Spent: $4.34 & Saved: $43.00
21 coupons used
4 FREE items

I made a second quick visit to Meijer when I realized that I had a Softsoap hand soap rain check that was about to expire AND I had several new Softsoap coupons to use in conjunction with the rain check!

Dave didn't like that I had picked up Crystal Light individual packets for water bottles, so I returned those and picked up the quart mixes instead.

I also tried using a Register Reward from Walgreens with my transaction and it worked... I'm still not sure if it was supposed to work, but it is a Manufacturer's coupon.

Costco

Grocery total: $10.77

I am not a HUGE Costco shopper, I am able to save far more $$$ by using coupons at the regular old grocery store.

But, I must admit that there are a few items that Costco prices just spank the competition with.... Crasins, lettuce, taco seasoning and bulk meat.

I hadn't compared prices between Meijer and Costco's lettuce in quite a while- and I was floored. I normally pay $4.99 for 6 heads of Romain at Meijer- and Costco's price was $3.39. I may have to start making more frequent Costco runs!

I also picked up a large container of taco seasoning for $3.99. Ounce for ounce the large container could season the same amount as 20 small packages- and usually those sell for $.79ish. If I purchase just the packets when I needed them, I could spend almost $16 instead of $4 on the large container. Bulk sometimes is better!!!

*I LOVE leaving Costco being able to carry my items out in my hands... no cart needed!

Grocery total: $106.26
Spent: $26.12 & Saved: $80.14
37 coupons used

If you have taken my class, I make mention of grabbing coupons/rebate forms off of tear pads while shopping. At two of my Kroger shopping trips a few months ago I found tear pads rebate forms for Gillette.

If I purchase a Gillette product and submit my receipt I will receive a coupon for a free Gillette item. So I actually broke this grocery trip into two transactions so I could submit two rebates!

NO COUPONS This Weekend

Please don't waste your time or you money picking up Sunday papers this weekend! No coupons will be inside!

Bummer!

"Homemade" Salad Dressing

We eat a lot of salad in our house! I LOVE salad, in fact I am know for making some of the yummiest salads on earth (I am not know for my humility huh?).

Since we practically drink salad dressing in our house, I like to make my own. My favorite seasoning packet is made by Good Seasons. I have tried using the store brand equivalent- which is still really yummy- but I have found that I can have the REAL THING if I get creative.

Last summer I popped into GFS (Gordon Food Service) to make a purchase and I found my favorite seasoning packet super sized! In fact, this packet makes 16 bottles of salad dressing for $5.29.
Small $1.49/bottle & Big $.33/bottle.
I keep my seasoning mix in a plastic storage container in the pantry until I need it.

Making homemade salad dressing is easy, super inexpensive, yummy and can be made healthier than purchased dressing. Here are all of the ingredients that I use: seasoning mix, red wine vinegar (you could sub balsamic if you'd prefer), vegetable oil and water.

I have purchased several Good Seasonings cruet's (salad dressing holders) they come in a box with two seasoning packets, and they usually sell for $2.59- which I think is funny because 2 small packets of seasonings alone should cost about $3.

Here are the simple steps in making your own dressing:

Fill the cruet up to the "V" line with vinegar- full price, this should cost about $.25.

Next, add water up to the "W" line... $0.

A heaping spoonful of seasoning mix is about 1/16 of the big packet, $.33.

The directions sat to add oil to the "O" line, but I add half the amount of oil, making the dressing lighter and yet still very yummy! $.10.

Lastly, I add more water all of the way to the top of the cruet. The directions do NOT say to do this, but it is just another way for the dressing to be healthier- I like a LOT of dressing!!!

Mmmmmmmmmmm, delicious! And only $.68!!!

Provide

Holidays are usually busy- brimming with family, friends and yummy food. But please set a moment aside this weekend to remember God is the One who always provides for us.

It is really easy to get wrapped up in the shopping and preparing of holiday meals- and to loose sight of Who really provides our finances and meals. God does. He single handedly provides for all of our needs. He always has.

Just as God provides for our families needs (not the stores or the manufacturer's coupons) God also provided a Way for us to live with Him forever in Heaven. Jesus, God's son, was and still is the provided way for us to be cleared of our sin. Easter's real celebration is Jesus' death and Resurrection.

40% Off

Recently I posted about how I purchase chicken on sale and how I prepare it for freezing. I also like to purchase my ground beef or ground turkey when it is 40% off because it is nearing its expiration date. (The use of freeze by date).

Last weekend I purchased 10 pounds of ground beef for $14. That's $1.40 per pound- a great deal! I cooked all 10 pounds of meat in a stockpot, I drained and rinsed (to get rid of more fat) the meat and placed it in 1 pound servings in a freezer Ziploc bag.

I find it is MUCH easier to thaw cooked meat than frozen meat- so cooking before freezing is my favorite. I also prefer to have flattened packages for the freezer- they stack nicely and since they are flat and thin- when I go to thaw a package I can easily break the meat into chunks before adding it to spaghetti sauce o other dishes.

Friend or Foe?

I absolutely LOVE U-Scan machines. What do you prefer?

"Dumpster Diving"

OK, OK, dumpster diving isn't really about climbing into a green stinky giant metal garbage can... its another act of frugalness.

Dumpster diving can include (but is not limited to):

-Asking friends, family or neighbors who receive the Sunday newspapers if you can have their coupon inserts if they do not use them.

-Trading coupons with friends... for example I trade pet coupons for baby coupons.

-Picking coupons out of the trash cans near the U-Scan machines.

I have a friend who swings into McDonalds after church to grab the coupon insert that people have left behind after they have enjoyed the paper and their cup of coffee.

I also had a SYS reader email me and say

"...I have gotten to know the man that I buy my paper from each Sunday after church. He knows I buy the paper for the coupons (because I got a paper without them one week and went back and asked for a different one). He gives me extra coupon packs almost every week. If he has the insert section (TV Book, coupons, comics, etc) that is missing something, he can't sell them. So, he has a big pile sitting there, and usually gives me an extra 2 or 3. Sometimes they are missing some of the coupons, but often I get several extra coupon packets for free. Just suggesting that getting to know your newspaper supplier can be to your advantage."

I'd LOVE to hear any other suggestions! Happy diving!

Cell Phone Coupons?

OK, this might just be another ploy used by my husband to be able to purchase an iPhone... here's the scoop!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Coupon Sherpa allows shoppers to access in-store coupons on their iPhone and iPod Touch
[April 7, 2008 - Fort Collins, CO] – It’s a situation that, as a shopper, you have likely encountered. You are in a store, find a product you want to purchase and recall seeing a coupon for a healthy discount. If only you would have remembered to bring the coupon along. Now, you can have access to in-store coupons where ever you have your iPhone.

Approved by Apple, Coupon Sherpa (www.couponsherpa.com) is available at the iPhone App Store. Finish Line, Zales Jewelers, Coldwater Creek, Gordon’s Jewelers, CompUSA, Jackson-Hewitt and Tiger Direct are among the over 100 retailers that shoppers can find coupons for on the application. Shoppers can find coupons for men’s and women’s clothing, electronics, restaurants, pet supplies, sporting goods, and local services.

Coupon Sherpa is user-friendly. (Hmmm, so is the Sunday newspaper!!!)

When shopping at brick-and-mortar stores, consumers show the cashier the appropriate coupon from the application on their iPhone or iPod Touch. The cashier then types in the bar code, or scans the coupon if that store has an optical scanner.“We are changing the way people use coupons. We believe this is the future of shopping,” said Luke Knowles, who created Coupon Sherpa with his brother, Jesse Knowles.

“A friend of ours mentioned that he longed for the day when many in-store coupons would be available on the iPhone. We thought that was a good idea and set out to make it a reality.”

Knowles understands the consumer demand for discounts, and how retailers that provide those discounts can increase their bottom line. In December 2007, Luke introduced FreeShipping.org (www.freeshipping.org), a one-stop destination for consumers to find online retailers that offer free shipping deals. Despite the recession, FreeShipping.org continues to grow. There are now more than 1,350 retailers who offer their free shipping deals and coupons on the site.

Knowles expects similar success for Coupon Sherpa, which allows retailers to post an unlimited number of coupons on the application for free. More than 20 million people own an iPhone, and even more have an iPod Touch. Coupon Sherpa gives merchants a forum for customers to save money and shop in their bricks-and-mortar locations.“In the future, most coupons will be presented on mobile devices,” (Sniff, sniff) Knowles added. “Retailers who become involved now, when the trend is new, can differentiate themselves from their competition.”

Q & A

From an email...

Coupon Clipper: I have another question...when shopping at Meijer with the Meijer mealbox coupons and then the manufacturer coupons which coupons should you give the cashier first?

I usually just hand over the wad of them but I don't think this is the best way since I've been getting more savvy at couponing.

Also, is there a limit on how many items you can purchase with a coupon. For instance, I was going to stockpile the Johnsonville sausage links and patties this week by purchasing close to 15 packages of them. I would then have 15 coupons. I'm just wondering if there's a maximum of coupons scanned per transaction. I'm asking now before I go.

Me: There are some some stores where it does matter which coupons you give first, second, and third...

Walgreen's is one of these stores. At Walgreen's it is best to have any in store "Walgreen's" coupons scanned first. Secondly, give the cashier your manufacturer coupons and lastly hand over your Register Rewards.

Grocery shopping is different in that the only think that you 'need' to hand over first would be a rain check of you had one. Handing over the rain check first just lessens the amount of work that the cashier will have to do to adjust the price on your rain check items. The main rule of thumb to remember when shopping with coupons is one manufacturer coupon per item. Adding in store coupons will not effect the manufacturer coupons...

for example you could have 3 tubes of toothpaste, you can use 3 manufacturer coupons and a store coupon with no problems.

There really isn't a coupon limit- but sometimes a manager will need to be called to approve a transaction... usually this just happens at Kroger. Happy stockpiling!

Mealbox Coupons

I just spoke with Meijer Corporate in regards to the change in wording on the mealbox coupons. For as long as I had been using the mealbox coupons through March 2009 the coupon wording across the top of the coupon said "store coupon."

Now a change has been made calling these coupons "Meijer manufacturer coupons."

Just like Rite Aid, who also calls their store coupons "Rite Aid manufacturer coupons," Meijer had just changed the verbiage from store to Meijer manufacturer... both still mean the same thing. Store coupon specifically for Meijer. (Maybe people were trying to use the mealbox coupons elsewhere and so Meijer decided to brand their coupons?)

Since Meijer mealbox manufacturer coupons are store coupons they may be combined with standard 'clipped from the newspaper/printed on the Internet' manufacturer coupons. This type of double coupon using is called stacking.

To print mealbox coupons for yourself, visit www.meijer.com.
Type in meal box in the search box. When meal box pops up, go to specials, and under specials you will find coupons. You may print these as many times as you like.

Mealbox coupons will often have limits as to how many items that you are allowed to purchase per transaction. I ask my cashier if they would prefer me to make several small transactions or if they would mind using multiple mealbox coupons in one transaction- often, I am allowed to make just one transaction.

CVS...

Total items: $256
Spent: $1.50 & Saved: $ 254.50

I used to feel extra special when I shopped my CVS because they would accept my ECB's (store rewards) long passed their expiration date. I would stockpile (shocker, I know) my ECB's until I really wanted or needed something- but recently I was told that I would need to shop just like everyone else, and I need to start using my rewards before they expire. Sniff, sniff, I'll obey.

I begged for mercy, asking for one week to spend my ECB's. Mercy was granted!

Tonight I shopped my little heart out!!! I decided to spend more ECB's than I rolled, because honestly I had too many to keep track of!

Crystal Light

From an email...

Coupon Clipper: I attended one of your parties recently and I have never been more excited about saving money!

I noticed that in this weekend's Meijer ad Crystal Light is buy 2 get one free. I also have a manufacturer's coupon that says buy 2 get 1 free. Can I combine these deals? How would that work?

Me: Make sure to combine!

Purchase 3 cans (containers...) Meijer pays for 1 can, your coupon (the manufacturer) pays for the second can and you need to pay for the third can.

Happy shopping!

FREE/SUPER INEXPENSIVE PAPER!

Visit www.hip2save.blogspot.com to find out how to get a great deal on copy paper at Staples!

...think COUPON printing paper!

Q & A

From an email...

Coupon Clipper: I stocked up on 6 bags of the Tyson Boneless Skinless Chicken that you bought a few weeks ago and I have a rain check to go stock up on more. I am worried it is going to get freezer burned. Any tips on keeping it fresher longer so I can stock up on more at the great price of $2.99 a bag?

Me: Way to go! Stocking up on meat is brilliant!

When I purchase frozen chicken it has always been eaten before it has gotten freezer burn, but I'll share with you my fresh chicken tricks that I think you can use just the same.

I fill a Ziploc bag with enough chicken for a single meal for my family. I like to add a marinade to the bag- allowing the chicken to marinate while it is freezing and then to marinate while it is thawing before use. Using this system I am able to preserve my chicken, pre- prepare my meal and squeeze out any air from my Ziploc and reduce the risk of freezer burning my meat.

I think, if you want to get ambitious, you could boil some of your chicken and 1) slice it into strips for stir fry or pasta dishes, or 2) flake the chicken and ready it for tacos or to make chicken noodle soup. Both of these pre- cooking ideas will get dinner on the table faster and will have you messing your kitchen only once!

Hopefully FreeShipping.org can help make these changes a little less daunting, and in some cases, even fun.”

Meijer

I do the majority of my grocery shopping at Meijer. I love Meijer's produce.

When I sit down to look at the weekly sales ad I look for the items that my family will need in the near future and I also look for 1-5 items to build my stockpile with.

A stockpile is multiples of the same item, like 3 boxes of cereal.

I have built my stockpile slowly, adding a few items each week, our most frequently used items, and now I mostly just maintain/replace the items that we are running low on.

Meijer is one of my favorite places to shop for building my stockpile because they offer store coupons and they accept manufacturer coupons. Using two sources of coupons and combining their savings is called stacking.

After I have made my grocery list and I have clipped and set aside the matching manufacturer coupons I visit meijer.com to see if I can match up Meijer's store coupons for even more savings from my grocery bill.

Here's how you find Meijer's store coupons:
Visit www.meijer.com
Type in meal box in the search box.
When meal box pops up, go to specials, and under specials you will find coupons. You may print these as many times as you like- just watch for limits here too!

*I did just learn something new about mealbox coupons just last week. Some of the mealbox coupons say manufacturer coupons instead of store coupon on the top. Beware, these coupons may not be stacked with an internet printable manufacturer's coupon or a clipped from the newspaper manufacturer coupon.

Happy Meijering!

RainCatchers

Thank you so much to all of you who have attended one of my coupon classes in March!!! Together we have raised $690 for Raincatchers! YTD: $1,460!!!

I was recently asked how much it costs to supply a Haitian family with a raincatcher and 55 gallon drum to store surplus water between rain storms. The total cost is roughly $200.

It is so hard to imagine that it only takes $200 to bring such an amazing change to a family (and surrounding neighbors!), plus the care and energy of teams to travel to Haiti to install the Raincatcher.

This picture (read more at www.raincatchers.org) shows children heading out for their daily trek to the watering hole- two hours away, to fetch the water that the family will need just to survive for one day. ONE DAY. 4 hours of walking to sustain "drinking water" for the family!

Thank you for giving the gift of water!

Q & A

From an email...

Coupon Clipper: WOW - I'm truly amazed at how you continually save big $$ at the grocery store. How do you do it? I live in a small town called St Paris, Ohio, I have a question to ask you about Kroger.

Say I went to purchase a PACE salsa product listed at $1.99 each. I use my $4.00 off coupon. I had a frustrating time with this last night.

The customer service manager said I couldn't use my $4 coupon that it would actually be reduced to $1.99 even though its a manufacturer's coupon listed as $4 off. Could you help me out on this? The same thing happened when I used a $3.50 coupon off of a bag of Purina cat food priced at $1.99.

The manager stated that the cashier would write in the correct product amount. I have yet to see a cashier do this since I was previously over at Wal-Mart picking up another PACE product and used my $4 off coupon with no problems.

It was a VERY, VERY, VERY bad experience at Kroger which I totally felt criticized for trying to save a buck. The cashier made me feel so uncomfortable that my total wasn't what I had added up since she was adding coupon figures back on my bill that I had the manager VOID out the transaction and actually had them re ring my order. It was significantly lower of course and during all of this the cashier LOST 2 of my coupons which she said I lost.

I was beyond frustrated and was about to burst into tears. I know this is NOT how couponing is supposed to be. I was at the register for a total of 45 minutes. Ugh!!

Me: First of all, I'd be on the phone with customer service- not with your store but at the corporate level. Using coupons is savvy shopping NOT illegal or stealing!!! When you call customer care, make sure to let them know how long you stood in line, specific rude comments that were made to you, the time of day you shopped, how the employees made you feel/ look in front of other customers, and ask if you may be sent a gift card for the value of the 2 coupons that the cashier lost. Be kind and adamant!

Secondly, I'd find a new Kroger. I'm in the process of finding a new Kroger close to home (Super Kroger is 45 minutes away) because the daytime cashiers are so terrible at my local store! It will be well worth an extra few minutes in the car for me to find a store with kind employees.

The truth about coupon overage (when your coupon value is worth more than the product) is that it is allowed at some stores and not at others. Sometimes it is even just allowed by some cashiers while other cashiers will not allow it.

Walmart, hands down, is the only store that I know of that allows overage all of the time.

I personally receive overage most often when I stack a store's coupon with a manufacturer's coupon. For example, last week I purchased Bic Soliel razors at Walgreens. They were on clearance for $3.59 and I had a $2 manufacturer's coupon and a $2 store coupon for Walgreen's monthly booklet, the Easy Saver Catalogue (pick one up in the entryway of the store.). SO my coupons totaled $4, but my product was $3.59.

Most of the grocery stores do not allow coupon overage- it is more of a rarity at the grocery store to even have high value coupons.

If I were you, I'd stick with Walmart for Pace and cat food. You did the right thing by trying to explain yourself to the cashier and manager- too bad they weren't interested in listening.

Please don't let this rotten experience hinder you from keeping up on your clipping and saving. There is an art to coupon spending and it sounds like you are well on your way to understanding- keep up the great work!
